Monday, October 10th, 2022, was still Columbus Day in some parts of the country. Right or wrong, many Italian Americans feel that the opposition to Columbus is a personal attack on their community. While it is true that Columbus wasn't perfect, he truly was a "man of his times," the facts that can't be disputed are that what Columbus did was a huge changing point in World history, re-uniting mankind of both Hemispheres who had been separated for tens or even hundreds of thousands of years and setting the stage for what would eventually become the United States of America. Many Italian Americans therefore look at him with pride. I, personally, see him as a major player in history, but I do not approve of everything he and the Europeans after him, did here in the Western Hemisphere. I recognize the good and the bad, not ignoring the good, nor glossing over the bad. But recognizing history for what it is and a pledge for me personally and for us humans to do better in the future, particularly in how we treat each other.
Have a good Columbus Day to those who celebrate it, an awesome Italian American Heritage Day, and a happy Indigenous Peoples Day with my pledge not to forget the suffering you (Indigenous Peoples) faced and the injustices you still face today. We as Italians faced prejudice in this country as well at one time and of course suffered thousands of years of conquest and colonization back in Europe. I don't agree with everything today's Native American activists fight for or say, but I am with you.

SAN DIEGO- Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in San Diego's Little Italy is not only a designated Italian National Parish but is also home to a Saint Joseph's Society, thus every year the parish has a big celebration for the Feast of Saint Joseph, also known as La Festa di San Giuseppe, or La Tavola di San Giuseppe, Saint Joseph's Table. There is a special Mass with a presentation from the society afterwards, a procession, and a luncheon in the hall. I could not make it this year however, I am sure it was celebrated with a heavy heart having just lost our beloved pastor, Fr. Louis Solcia (see here). More..
SAN DIEGO —
Father Louis Maria Solcia was more than a “father” in the religious sense, but a true father figure to many in San Diego’s Italian community.
An associate pastor at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Little Italy since 1990, he was a staple in the community. “Father Louie,” as many lovingly referred to him, was known for his long confession lines and kind, gentle soul.
Father Solcia died March 2 at age 91 at the church’s residence. Those close to the pastor say his legacy will live on through the church that has been a cornerstone for the Italian-American community since it was established in 1925. Read more here.

Hi there! My name's Marissa Forte and I'm a contributor to this amazing project! Growing up, I have had great respect for our Italian roots, hearing stories and jokes about Italian culture while my family portrayed it in the most entertaining ways! I even got to sort of "reconnect" with our heritage with my Europe trip which brought me to Italy in 2019. Since then, I have been photographing my many travels local and abroad. I originally started out with my phone as an aviation photographer, but since my upgrade to a canon T7 I have broadened my subjects & genres which you can see on my Instagram, @heartsongforte
